Come to the Meeting Prepared
The easiest way to ensure a smooth IEP meeting is to prepare. There are many resources available on the web that offer advice, but the video below which was produced by the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance is one of the most comprehensive available. Although it is a bit long at nearly 8 minutes you will find that it is time well spent after you've successfully participated in your child's IEP meeting.
More Pre-IEP Tips
In addition to recommendations in the video, here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:
Many parents who are challenged and frustrated by their child's IEP simply need to take more time to educate themselves and prepare. Give yourself every opportunity to succeed, understand that there will be stumbles along the way, and allow the learning to take place naturally.
- Bring along a pen and pad of paper. You will be asked to sign several documents and you will have the ability to make notes during the course of the meeting.
- Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers because you can always remove a sweater if you are too warm. It is very difficult to focus on the meeting if you are uncomfortable.
