IEP Timeline
1975-Birth of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) with the passage of Public Law 94-142 the Education of All Handicapped Children’s Act (EHA). This law contained the first requirements for the development of an IEP for students with disabilities requiring special education services.
1986-Public Law 99-475 added to EHA by requiring early interventions for infants and toddlers
1990-Public Law 101-476 changed the name of the laws from Education of All Handicapped Children’s Act or EHA to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA.
1997-Public Law 105-017 (IDEA amendment) required all students with disabilities to participate in state and district-wide assessments along with their same age peers in general education as required by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.
2004-Public Law 108-446 (IDEA amendment) changed the name of the law to Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA)and required additional accountability in the area of assessment
